Environmentally a most important event in
2002 is the Earth Summit at
Johannesburg in August/ Sept
I do ask CTSN to consider whether it should
organise an event in this connection . On the occasion of the previous such
event (Rio, 1992) we had a conference
at Spurgeon’s College
Perhaps
this might be combined with a Croydon
Local Agenda 21 presentation
Rio
1992 was the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development which adopted conventions on Climate
Change, Biodiversity , Sustainable Development ( Agenda 21) The 2002 summit will assess progress on all
these issues
Christian
Ecology Link
Christian
Ecology Link , with some other groups is planning a leaflet about the Earth Summit to go to all churches
in the spring.
CEL’s twice
yearly environmental news sheet ,
ChurchLink goes to all CTSN churches . Does yours get put on view or used in
your magazine.? I wrote to church contacts asking about this,
but not all replied. Did you?

Some other LA21 items
Peter Mc Donald
writes:
Renewable Energy - we have a government-backed grant
to support local projects that use renewable energy (we don't have a figure
yet, but is mainly to support groups to go out and raise the money itself).
Ideal
for a church or community centre wanting to put
in solar panels or solar heating
Rickshaws - working with Council's business
unit and some local businesses to see if we can a pilot a rickshaw taxi service
in central Croydon.
Guide to Green living - new edition is better than ever;
we can supply100's if required.
Recycling - government targets for recycling
levels are increasing, and there will be some money coming through to support
this. recycling unit is expecting to
extend the household collection scheme to 10,000
more homes. We are also looking at potential
for community projects and social enterprises to run recycling schemes.
Fairtrade: meeting this Saturday 26 January
(9.30-1.00pm) in resource Centre at St Mary's Wellesley Road to consider
declaring Croydon a Fair Trade Town. It would help if all churches and places
of worship
had a policy of buying fair trade tea and
coffee, and having a Fair Trade stall. South
Norwood could lead the way
